Sweet is a new full-length play written by local playwright Schatzie Schaefers for the “Off the Rocks” Drama Therapy program launched by Tami Lubitsh MA RDT of Akeela, Inc. Schaefers sat in as Ms Lubitsh spent several months conducting weekly workshops with women in recovery from substance abuse who live at Akeela House and Glenwood Center. Inspired by the women’s stories, Schaefers then wrote the play which will debut in a fully-staged production at Out North Theatre in February.

Sweet is a story about addiction, fear and change. The action takes place in two locations: a castle in 17^th century Hungary , and a modern-day Oregon meth lab. The cast is made up of actresses from the local theatre community, two former Anchorage actresses, and women from the Off the Rocks program.

The Cast: Sarah MacMillan, Kristina Church, Shannon Page, Jamie Pauley, Madeline Klever, Jill Yarbrough, Judy Eastwood, and Sheila Sweet Major.

“Off the Rocks” is a project using theater and drama therapy as tools to create a healing process for women in recovery and to increase community awareness about substance abuse.

We use theater to promote health, foster growth, and enhance the wellness of individuals and the community at-large.

This exciting project started from a grassroots effort by Akeela Inc. and VSA Arts of Alaska.

The project has been funded in part by The Alaska Mental Health Trust, the Alaska Division of Behavioral Health, VSA Arts/Out North the Alaska State Council on the Art and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition hundreds of man-hours have been donated along materials and supplies.
